Arizona Burn Center – Valleywise Health
As Arizona’s only nationally-verified burn center, thousands of patients each year trust us to provide the specialized, outstanding care they need to begin their recovery.

The Arizona Burn Center – Valleywise Health treats every imaginable type of burn – including those caused by fire, hot liquids, electricity and lightning, chemicals, smoke inhalation, and Arizona’s extreme summer heat. We also care for patients with severe skin infections, such as necrotizing fasciitis and other skin diseases, as well as severe acute and chronic wounds.

Working in partnership with our nationally verified Trauma Center, the Arizona Burn Center offers critically injured patients a greater than 98 percent survival rate, exceeding the national average of 94 percent.

Working in the premier regional burn center in the Southwest, our medical staff provides outstanding, specialized care to more than 1,000 inpatients, 2,500 emergency room patients, and 5,000 outpatients a year who come from Arizona, California, New Mexico and Northern Mexico.

Legacy
As the population of Maricopa County quickly grew during the 20th century, it became apparent the local communities would need a dedicated burn center. Under the leadership of MacDonald Wood, MD, FACS, the Arizona Burn Center – Valleywise Health began treating patients in 1965. Starting out as a five-bed unit, the center quickly expanded as patient demand grew.

After completing an extensive, $2 million renovation of the burn center in 1999, the state rededicated it to honor the pioneering leadership of Dr. Wood and his contribution to burn care treatment in the Southwest.

In 2000, the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma bestowed its highest level of burn care recognition on the Arizona Burn Center. Burn center verification is a true mark of excellence and indicates that a center provides the highest level of patient care from initial treatment through rehabilitation. Since that time, the committee has reverified the Arizona Burn Center in 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012, 2015, and most recently in 2018. By 2006, the Arizona Burn Center had expanded to 35 beds, which included 19 dedicated for intensive care under the leadership of Dr. Daniel Caruso.

In 2007, the Arizona Burn Center acquired the majority of the 7th floor of the Valleywise Health Medical Center and increased capacity to 45 beds (19 ICU and 26 Telemetry/Medical/Surgical). The 7th floor also includes a dedicated pediatric telemetry/medical/surgical area as well as a pediatric playroom. During this expansion, the burn department significantly increased its rehabilitation services.
