WHAT IS “ROBOTIC SURGERY”
When Medically Appropriate, We Utilize Robotic Surgery Technology
We use this to treat colorectal conditions such as colon cancer, rectal cancer, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, and more.
Robotic Surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery that is powered by robotic technology, and performed utilizing a robotic surgery platform. We use the da Vinci Surgical System, the most popular platform—it has been used on more 3 million patients worldwide. The technology allows the surgeon’s hand movements to be translated into smaller, precise movements by the robot, allowing what is typically major surgery to be performed through small—often less than 1-inch—incisions.
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE?
With the da Vinci Surgical System, we sit at a special console, and the patient is positioned under the “robotic arms.” A special magnified vision system provides us with a 3D HD view inside the patient. From the console, we are able to control the robotic arms, which follow the hand movements we make, translating our movements into smaller ones made with tiny instruments.
WHY IS ROBOTIC SURGERY USED?
Since this type of surgery allows for smaller incisions, and since smaller instruments are utilized to perform it, the precise surgery allows for a faster recovery. Ultimately, this decreases your overall pain and allows you to be sent home from the hospital faster. Our overall goal is your quality of life.
OTHER TYPES OF SURGERY METHODS:
If a patient is not a candidate for robotic surgery, our surgeons are well versed in open surgery, as well. We also offer laparoscopic procedures and trans-anal minimally invasive surgeries (TAMIS).
